Evergreen Fiddler – September 2022

Description automatically generated with medium confidenceThe start of September always brings the annual District 5 Labor Day Campout in Gorst at the Kitsap Square Dance Association. I’m really glad I headed over to see everyone and play some tunes. The weather was spectacular and the people and music was even better. I played in my very first “Poker Jam” (which I still feel we could add a poker element to – by simply checking your hand at the end of 5 scrambles to see who has the best one). It was a great way to meet so many new-to-me folks, and to learn tunes that are popular in other districts. I don’t know if there was a distance award, but it was great to see so many people from so many places coming over for the weekend’s events. I really loved hearing people teaching each other tunes that they themselves had learned at this year's Fiddle Camp. It warmed my heart to watch and hear our core mission in action.

A group of books on a table

Description automatically generated with medium confidenceAt the campout, I cornered a few people and had them proofread a little project I’ve been working on – a new “About us” flyer. I haven’t ordered them for printing yet, but if you would like to put some up in your local music store, community lesson area, community information area, or just keep some in your instrument case for distribution at playouts or jams, please let me know, and I’ll do my best to get some mailed out to you once they’re printed. E-Mail me at Clarinet.KatieG@gmail.com. I also still have business cards if you would like some of those too (Easy to keep in your instrument case!)

As we work on building our membership and involvement, I’m looking for help with Social Media management. If you’re willing and able to help me out with our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and/or TikTok accounts, drop me a line! I’m not the best at these platforms, and although I try to get scheduled posts up, I need ideas/advice/general help! Also, October is creeping up on us fast, and district elections happen at the October meetings. As we work to build our membership, every district needs help and getting involved is the easiest way you can help out. Put your name in to help your district!

Tune of the Month: The White Cockade

09/01/2022 – Author: Kitty Steetle

This tune is believed to date back to at least 1669 in John Playford’s tune collection, Apollo’s Banquet (London, 1669).[1]  It is later found in the American publication of Evening Amusement (Philadelphia, 1796) compiled by Benjamin and Joseph Carr.[2] The white cockade is thought to either refer to the white ribbon rosette associated with the Jacobite rebels in 1715 and 1745 in Scotland and Ireland, or the ‘bouquets of ribbons worn by the young women of Munster at weddings and other such occasions’ in the 17th century.[3]

The White Cockade can be played as a polka[4] or as a Scottish Measure[5] and can be found in the key of G, D, or C depending on the publication. Phil and Vivian’s Recording: https://youtu.be/30hyBXExJmM

Eloise Hubbard Linscott includes The White Cockade dance steps in her collection, Folk Songs of Old New England (1939), stating that this dance was being performed in New England in the 1930s.[6]

District 2 Report (Ferry, Lincoln, Pend O'Reille, Spokane, and Stevens Counties)

09/01/2022 – Author: Kyle Peterson

The Bluewaters Bluegrass Festival was resurrected over the second weekend of August. The lineup was very professional, the sound engineering was excellent, there were just a few delays when the bands changed, and attendance was very strong. A few people – well, mostly me – felt that past years’ lineups had a couple of acoustic acts that focused on traditional tunes, whereas this year the features were exclusively bluegrass-oriented. Then again, it is probably not reasonable to expect anything else from an organization titled the Inland Northwest Bluegrass Association. Workshops ranged from fiddle to guitar to banjo to singing, and an event featured the tunes of John Hartford. It was a lot of fun and I am sure that everyone felt boosted by the revival of such a great tradition.

There also has been some resurrection of the local performing arts, as JayDean Ludikers’ self-titled Adult Therapy Group has been bringing their professional-level skills to the Broadway Court Estates and I understand that the Piney Ridge Pickers have been playing at the retirement home in their area. I hope everyone is having a good time and will continue to get out and cheer the atmosphere at the assisted-living facilities in our area.

District 5 Report (Kitsap, Mason, Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties)

09/01/2022 – Author: Laura Farr

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer.  Even though it was a bit warmer there for a while than most of us like, it was good to see so much sunshine to lift everyone’s spirits after such a wet and cool spring.  Now, as we move into fall, it’s time for normal schedules to resume.

Our regular meetings will resume on the 3rd Saturday of September — the 17th at the Kitsap Square Dance Club in Gorst.  The tune learning will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the business meeting at noon.  Jamming will ensue following the meeting until about 2:45, allowing for clean-up prior to leaving at 3:00.  The first Thursday evening jam at the Salmon Center in Belfair takes place from 6-9 pm.  The 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoon jams in the big barn at the Salmon Center are from 1-4 pm.  We are playing at the Port Orchard Farmers’ Market on Saturday, September 10th and the Poulsbo Farmers’ Market on Saturday, September 24th.  Contact Kay McCarthy for time and details if you would like to join us at either event at kaycmccarthy@gmail.com

The monthly playouts are at Liberty Shores in Poulsbo on Tuesday, September 13th at 2:00 and Bay Point in Bremerton on Tuesday, September 27th at 2:00.  Contact Kay McCarthy for details.

District 6 Report (King County)

09/01/2022  -  Author: Jenny Swanson

We welcome the month of September 2022 in district 6 because we are resuming our twice monthly events at the DesMoines Masonic Center located at 2208 S 223rd in DesMoines, WA.

The first event (on the 2nd Saturday) is one big circle jam with a meeting stuck in the middle.  Doors open on Sept. 10th at noon and we jam until about 1 pm when we stop for a short meeting.  Then we will resume jamming until about 4 pm.

The 2nd event (on the 4th Sat.) is a circle jam with doors opening at 1 pm.  In Sept, this jam is on the 24th.

Everyone is welcome at these events so come ready to play and sing music.  Remember to bring your own music and choose songs that others can play along with and are well known.  It also helps to practice your songs before you come and think about which ones are in a key that is easy for most to play in.  It’s more fun if everyone can participate.  This isn’t a performance, but it is all about making music together.  Come and enjoy!

Lastly, remember that we will be holding an election for district 6 chair at the Oct. 8th meeting.  Please consider taking over Roy’s job.  Anyone who is brave enough to try will be well supported.  For questions about what this position entails or to run for chairman of  District 6, contact Earl DeWitt at earldewitt7@gmail.com

We would like to sincerely thank WOTFA and the districts that were able to contribute, for your support of the Washington State Fiddle Championships this year! The contest was a success! Our contestant numbers were understandably lower but everyone banned together to keep the music flowing for two days!

Our audience numbers were the best we’ve ever had (full seats a majority of the time) and the fair loved us. Our district intends to get back on a regular schedule of meetings and jam sessions as we work to rebuild our district. The Covington House (the oldest building in Washington) has invited us to jam at their periodic functions, so that will be fun. We also look forward to getting back to jamming at the Clark County Historical Museum.

Happy Fiddling Everyone!

09/01/2022 – Author: Rita Hubbard

District 15 will resume their meeting and jam on September 10th at the Sequim Prairie Grange.  We are changing venues because the Shipley Center is not available to us!  Please make the meeting so we can make decisions on how to move forward – stay at the grange or find another place?  Starting at 9:00 am it would be appreciated if you could come and help set up tables and chairs – and please bring a snack to share.  The plan is for a jam and possibly some instruction in the side room – no “performance” will be planned and we have the hall until 4:00 pm.

I will be sending out messages to our District 15 members to keep them updated – watch for them on your phone – called a “phone blast” and will contain updates on what’s coming up next.  Our 4th Saturday jam is scheduled at the Tri Area Community Center from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

A group of our WOTFA fiddlers entertained at the Arlington Street Fair in July and received an award. Thanks to our musicians.

Long time members, Chick & Virginia Crane, hosted a going away party at their beautiful home in Arlington. They have an offer on their home and will be moving to Idaho where some of their family lives. We will miss Chick’s sweet fiddle playing.

Our jam sessions will continue on every 2nd & 4th Friday nights. Mark your calendars for the 2nd & 4th Friday nights, 5:30 – 10:00 pm (or a bit later) at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527-99th Ave NE, Arlington, WA 98223.

Business meetings will resume in September on the 4th Friday jam. In October we will be voting for officers and Noel will entertain anyone who would be interested in serving.

Our next WOTFA Midway Jam will be Sunday,August 25, 1:30-4:00 pm, at the Lynnwood Library (19200 44th Ave W, Lynnwood). We have a great time playing fiddle tunes, bluegrass tunes, some swing tunes and being challenged with new tunes. I have a large email list so will send out the date when confirmed for September. Feel free to ask other musician friends to join us.
