Tune of the Month: The Rakes of Mallow

06/01/2022 – Author: Josh Larios and Kitty Steetle
A sheet of music

Description automatically generated with low confidence

Like many classic American folk tunes, The Rakes of Mallow is strongly linked to Ireland. The town of Mallow is located near Cork, Ireland, and was the home of a spa resort between 1730 and 1810. Apparently when the young folk were not bathing or drinking the waters, they did other activities discussed in the first verse of The Rakes of Mallow published around 1740:[1]

Beau-ing, belle-ing, dancing, drinking.
Breaking windows, cursing, sinking.
Ever raking, never thinking,
Live the Rakes of Mallow.

Spending faster than it comes.
Beating waiters, bailis, duns,
Bachus’ true begotten sons,
Lives the Rakes of Mallow.

The Rakes of Mallow can be heard in Old Time Jams, Contradances, Irish and Scottish Sessions, and at University of Notre Dame football games.[2]

District 2 Report (Ferry, Lincoln, Pend O'Reille, Spokane, and Stevens Counties)

06/01/2022 – Author: Kyle Peterson

Music erupted after a two-year hiatus with the Northwest Regional Fiddle Contest in Spokane in early May. I couldn’t tell any dropoff among the musicians competing, which was very frustrating for me, as I was counting on everyone struggling to find the right note like I was. But I think everyone had a good time, the performances were terrific and it was good to hear the tunes so familiar to us. Throw in a fun raffle, a chance to shoot a game of pool or bowl a frame, and no one could ask for anything more – except for another fiddle competition.

So a week later, many of us gathered at the Community Center in Chewelah for Fiddlers On The Peak. The atmosphere might be a little more relaxed, but competition was challenging, with marvelous performances in all categories. It is particularly enjoyable to see so many promising fiddlers playing through the small fry, junior and young adult rounds. I’d love to keep playing until they made their way into the Senior Rounds, but then again, I barely get on the stage with the current competition. It was great listening to the guitar/mandolin/banjo competition, the twin fiddling round, and the informal band invitational during the break. I didn’t place in the top five, but I did get some chocolate and I got to waltz with Joanie for a couple of turns across the gym floor. All in all, it was a great month.

In District 2, bordering Idaho as we are, we are looking forward to the National Fiddle Competition in a months’ time in Weiser, the Music Camp in Moses Lake and then the Bluewaters Music Festival in Medical Lake in August. We hope to see more of you at one or more of the above and if you are having trouble moving your fingers along the neck like I am, well, you must rededicate yourself to play the catgut strings for these summer events.

The May 20th meeting was short with new information. We have added another playdate to our calendar. Prestige Senior living at 589 Highline Dr, E Wenatchee will be our first performance on the 1st Tuesday of the month @ 1pm. and Blossom Valley on the third Tuesday of the month @ 2pm.

We had our first playdate @ Blossom Valley on Tuesday May 16th. Great response from our faithful members (11 of us) and well received by the folks at the Valley. As you may gather from my writing this group is more than a group of musicians, we are friends that enjoy each other. Music is just the vehicle that brought us together. For that I’m forever grateful.

Our regular monthly meeting/jam will be on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Eagles, 2pm

On a sad note our dear member from Cashmere, Wrey Schmidt passed away earlier this week. RIP Wrey and prayers to the Schmidt Family

I can tell that it’s time for the June newsletter because the gardens are starting to look good in our area.  I’ve included an example which you can see better by clicking on the picture:

A picture containing tree, outdoor, plant, forest

Description automatically generatedWe are all missing our jams at the Mason’s hall in District 6 because we’re taking our usual four month break.  However, we will resume in Sept. when there seems to be less competition for our time from vacations and other stuff that makes summers so busy.

The calendar for June is looking good with 3 playdates scheduled.  It’s so nice to play music for folks in retirement homes.  The musicians and audience both seem to enjoy themselves.  Thanks to all the WOTFA members who are taking time to spread some cheer.

A person playing a guitar

Description automatically generated with low confidenceOur featured member this month is Kathy Peterson.  She has been a musician and a District 6 member for many years, first with her husband and then continuing on her own after he died.  I understand that they put together an extensive songbook for use in our fiddlers organization.  Besides that, Kathy is a faithful attender of the twice monthly meetings and jams.  She brings a good sound to our music when she plays her bass and introduces a variety of songs with her enjoyable fiddle playing.  Everyone enjoys playing alongside her in our playdates and she is in much demand to accompany groups in our shows.  Besides all that, she is always pitching in to help with whatever needs doing.  Thanks, Kathy, for all you add to District 6!  Click on the picture to see her great smile.

In other news, we will again be holding an election for District 6 Chair at our Oct. 8th meeting.  Please be thinking about running for this position.  Roy really wants to step down after all these years and let someone else take over.  Anyone who is brave enough to try will be well supported.  Roy reports that he and Shirley made a lot of close friends just by being involved in this way.  There are many interesting and enjoyable people involved in WOTFA all over the state.  It would be much appreciated by Roy if someone would give it a try.  Please think about it.  Any questions, or to run for the position, please contact Earl by the following email:  earldewitt7@gmail.com

That’s all for this month.  Keep playing music with your friends.

Hi Everyone!

For the month of June we have a couple of things going on:

The first is our regular monthly meeting and jam on Friday, June 3rd from 10 am-Noon at Faith Baptist Church, located at 436 Coal Creek Rd in Chehalis. To get to the Church take I-5 to exit 79, then head East over the freeway.  Turn LEFT on N. National Ave and go .3 miles, then take a RIGHT on Coal Creek Rd, then go 1.1 miles and take a RIGHT into the Church driveway, we will be in the middle building.  It won’t be a potluck but there will be coffee, tea and some snacks available.

For our tune of the month we will be playing ‘Amelia’, a really nice Canadian Waltz in the key of D. I will bring music to hand out for Amelia for anyone who wants it.

Everyone is welcome to attend the jam.

Our other event for June is our regular monthly playdate on Wednesday, June 8th from 4:00-5:00pm at Colonial Stillwater Estates, located at 2700 Colonial Drive in Centralia.  We will be playing just outside the Colonial residence until the mask mandate is lifted, so I will keep an eye on the weather and keep everyone updated on things in the days before the playdate. I’m hoping for sunny and 70 now that June is here, but we’ll see. Please come to our playdate and lend a hand if you are able, we would love to see you there!
