SUMMARY:Oly Old Time Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 16th Oly Old Time Festival! \nFebruary 12-15\, 2026\nAbout the Festival\n\nThe Olympia Old Time Festival (Olympia\, WA) is an annual music event dedicated to teaching\, learning\, and participating in the tradition of old-time music. Artists from around the US and Canada come to play concerts\, jam\, call dances\, and teach workshops in this beloved event well-known in the national Old Time Music scene. The festival began in 2008 as a grassroots passion project and in 2016 became a program of Arbutus Folk School. \nWe open with a jam at a downtown restaurant/brewery on Thursday night\, run concurrent workshops during the day and concerts/dances at night on Friday and Saturday\, and end on Sunday afternoon. Events for this festival unfold at multiple locations: Arbutus Folk School downtown\, and the South Bay Grange. \nWe offer amazing concerts and performances\, entertaining and exciting old time traditional dances\, and hands-on workshops that cover a wide variety of musical instruments\, singing styles\, traditional crafts\, and dances. Old-Time music is highly participatory\, with most fans participating in dances to the music and usually are musicians themselves. \nThe opportunity to learn from\, jam with\, and dance to music from well-known national artists is a key feature of the festival. Free daytime workshops cover topics like clawhammer banjo\, fiddle tunes in two keys\, hambone (body percussion)\, make a crankie\, two-step and waltz Cajun dancing\, and clogging\, all led by festival artists in addition to their nighttime performances and all-weekend jams. \n2026 Festival Schedule!\n(scroll to bottom for workshop schedule!)\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 2/12\nKick Off Jam (Free)\n6pm-9pm                        Ilk Lodge Brewery (Downtown Olympia)\n9pm until it ends          Mossy Bottom Records (Downtown Olympia)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 2/13\n\n\nSaturday 2/14\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaytime Workshops (Free)\n1 1/2 hour long workshops\, scroll down for workshop detailsDaytime Workshop Locations\n 12pm-4:30pm              Arbutus Folk School\n12pm-4:30pm              South Bay Grange \n\nFriday Evening Events\n(get tickets here!)\n\nLounge Acts                  South Bay Grange\n5pm-6pm                     \nDear Crow6pm-7pm                     \nMississippi Hotdogs\n                            \nMain Concert               South Bay Grange\n7pm-10pm                 \nSquirrel Butter\nGolden Shoals\nAlum Ridge Boys and Ashlee\n\nSquare Dance             South Bay Grange\n10pm-12pm  \nThe Tallboys Reunion! \nCaller: Connor Maguire    \n\n\n\nJamming throughout and late\, late at Grange         \n\n\n\nDaytime Workshops (Free) \n1 1/2 hour long workshops\, scroll down for workshop detailsDaytime Workshop Locations\n 12pm-4:30pm              Arbutus Folk School\n12pm-4:30pm              South Bay Grange\n \n\nSaturday Evening Events\n(get tickets here!\n\nLounge Acts                South Bay Grange\n5pm-6pm                     \nThe Tallboys Stringband6pm-7pm                     \nTradwife Stringband\n\nSquare Dance            South Bay Grange\n7pm-9pm  \nAlum Ridge Boys and Ashlee \nCaller: Charmaine Slaven     \nHonky Tonk Dance\n9pm-11pm                  South Bay Grange\nMississippi Hotdogs \nLine Dancing\nSouth Bay Grange\n11pm – until it ends!  \n\nJamming throughout and late\, late at Grange \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 2/15 \nCrankie Show (Free)\n1pm-3pm                    South Bay GrangeWhat is a Crankie? \nA crankie is a centuries-old art form and story telling tradition that brings together music\, lyrics\, and art. It consists of a box with two scrolls of paper or some other material that is “cranked” to reveal images that are set to music and lyrics. If you have never seen a crankie show you are in for a treat! Our crankie show will feature performances by Sue Truman and the Crankie Factory (with W.B. Reid and Jerry Gallaher)\, Zoe Leger\, and the Oly Old Time Festival crankie (made during Friday’s crankie-making workshop). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Workshop Schedule!\nWorkshop Locations: \nClick HERE for directions to workshop venuesWorkshops run from 1.5 – 2.5 hours (note the times for each workshop)\nNote the location: South Bay Grange or Arbutus Folk School\nYellow indicates especially family or kid friendly \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Workshops\n\n\nSaturday Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12pm – 1:30pm\nOld Time Fiddle (all levels)\nSouth Bay Grange Hall\nCharlie Beck\nPlay some fun and accessible old time fiddle tunes.  Charlie will teach the particulars and then you’ll take ’em for a spin together.  Questions and participation will be welcome.12pm – 2:30pm (note this is a 2.5 hour workshop)\nCommunity Crankie Making (all levels) \nSouth Bay Grange Lounge\nEmily Teachout and Shanty Slater\nIllustrate a tune or ballad on a scroll of paper\, then perform it by illuminating it from behind and rolling it by in time to the music.  Emily and Shanty will demonstrate a crankie they’ve already made and then the class will make one together.  Bring yourself and your creativity.  All supplies provided.  There may be an opportunity to perform the crankie later in the week!12pm – 1:30pm\nOld Time Mandolin (Intermediate)\nArbutus Folk School Front Room\nAndrew Small\nTune up the old 8-string and explore all things mandolin!
